Learning Japanese

It’s my first to study Japanese at school and it's a whole new language for me.  I think it’s really hard for me to learn a new language since I learned. Although there are a lot of Japanese songs, movies, TV shows and products around us and I love to use Japanese 3C and Cosmetics and skin care products. But I never think I will spend time on learning Japanese before. It’s a huge challenge for me and Japanese is really difficult to learning. It has basic 50 Tone and one is for Hiragana and another one is Katakana. It’s hard for me to remember these 100 Tone and it’s easy to forget after reading. I just know I have to study Japanese for 3 semesters, and it will kill me. We are going to have the mid-term this Sunday and I am so nervous now. I am afraid I won’t get good points on this course.

Good Shopping Experience

I prefer to shop online so I usually shop at eBay and Yahoo. A few years ago, I wanted to buy some clothes for my daughters and I found a special seller at Yahoo. She is also a mother and she sold a lot of American Brands, such as, Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic and Gymboree….. I bought some stuffs from her at the first time. When I received the closes and shoes I ordered. I was surprised and impressive about her product. They are so beautiful and the real products were just match with the photos. Everything that the seller sold was all from America and her daughter was also the model to demo her products. I wanted to buy some others clothes from her again so I asked her to recommend me some tips to choice clothes. She also give me some advise and I bought more stuffs form her. She also taught me how to shop online at www.gap.com. Finally we became friends after all.

The Garbage Project

Most archaeologists study buried housed, broken objects, and old garbage to learn important things about ancient societies. At the University of Arizona in the United States, however, archaeology students are investigating today’s garbage. They hope to learn important things about modern society by studying its garbage. The Garbage Project started at the University of Arizona in 1973. Since then, students have studied garbage in cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

To study the modern world’s garbage, students had to travel to landfills, the places where cities bury their garbage. While the students were studying the garbage, they wore special clothes and used safety equipment. Students were also very careful when they opened bags of garbage. What have students in the Garbage Project learned from studying modern garbage? One important thing they learned is that the garbage in landfills disappears very slowly. That was surprising to the students, as well as to many scientists who had predicted that roughly 70% of the garbage in landfills would disappear naturally and quickly. Even in cities where it rains a lot, the students found newspapers from 1948, forty-year-old hot dogs, and lettuce from 1970.

The Garbage Project also revealed that what people say they do is often very different from what they actually do. The archaeology students asked people what they bought, ate, and drank, and then they compared this to what people threw away. For some reason, the two didn't match. For example, the students found many more empty bottles of alcohol than people said they drank.

Information from the Garbage Project has also helped us to see how much garbage we actually put in landfills. The students are hopeful that this will encourage us to find better ways to dispose of our garbage. Of course, the best way to dispose of garbage depends on what kind of garbage it is: regular garbage, hazardous materials, or recyclables, such as newspapers, glass bottles, and some metals. Regular garbage goes to regular landfills. Hazardous materials, on the other hand, contain poisonous chemicals or metals. They shouldn't go into regular landfills.

Ordinary houses are full of hazardous waste. The most problematic hazardous waste in homes is batteries. When batteries end up in a landfill, they often break open. The poison inside them moves through rain water and other liquids to the bottom of the landfill. Then it can pollute the natural water in the ground. People could avoid this problem by using rechargeable batteries.

Another hazardous waste from homes is motor oil. When people pour old motor oil on the ground or throw it in the garbage, it poisons the environment. They should recycle old motor oil instead.

Unfortunately, recycling is expensive. It takes time, equipment, and special treatment. Toronto began the first recycling program in North America in 1982. The city started by recycling newspapers, and later it added glass and cans to its recycling program. When students from the Garbage Project studied the Toronto landfills, they found that recycling was having a positive effect. Since 1982, Toronto has reduces the amount of garbage going into its landfills by 25%.

A health official once said, "We're in deep trouble here. We have too much garbage, our landfills are closing, and we can't open new ones because people don't want them. If we don't do something about our garbage, we're going to be buried in it.” The health official made that statement in 1889! Clearly, our garbage problem is not new, but as the world's population continues to grow, it will become a bigger and bigger problem.

A Person Who Has Made a Difference: My English Teacher

Ms. Tsai was my English teacher when I was studying at Junior high school. It was also her first time to teach English there. The teaching method was very new and fresh for me. Ms. Tsai chose me to be her assistant in our class and asked me to lead all the classmates to read aloud the vocabulary from English textbook after the school bell had been rang. Teacher always suddenly appeared behind the classroom and corrected our pronunciations right away. So I was under lot of pressure and I had to do preparation for lessons before the class. But it was also a great opportunity and challenge for me to study harder. Her teaching style was very vivid, lives and opened my mind deeply. She inspired me the way to learn English and let me love English more and more. I know she lives in Kaohsiung and teaches English at a senior high school. I really want to see her again and I miss her so much.

MAMMA MIA

Mamma Mia is based on the songs of ABBA. ABBA was a Swedish singer group active from 1972 - 1982 and was one of the most internationally popular pop groups of all time. The movie is a story about a 20 years old girl who invites her 3 possible fathers to walk her down the aisle. The main actress is Meryl Streep and she plays Donna Sheridan and another actress is Amanda Seyfried she plays Sophie. The actors are Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård and they play the 3 possible fathers of Sophie. Donna is a single parent and raises her only daughter, Sophie by herself. Sophie is going to marry her fiance, and she wants her father to walk her down the aisle during her wedding. She is confused because she doesn’t know which one is her father so this makes the story complexly and fascinatingly. I was surprised when I first saw the movie because all the actors and actress were singing by themselves. My favorite actress Meryl Streep’s acting was so wonderful and touching. All the songs are matched the story and are appealing to the ear. I think it’s a great movie and I will recommend my friend to see this movie.
